Job Description: Access & Environment Officer for Places to Paddle

Full time position (37 hours per week) – permanent

Based at the National Water Sports Centre, Holme Pierrepont, Nottingham

Salary Up to £30,000

British Canoeing is the United Kingdom’s Governing Body for the sport and recreation of canoeing and kayaking. This is an exciting time to join British Canoeing, as we develop an exciting and ambitious new strategy for paddlesport in the UK (2017-2021).

We are looking to strengthen Places to Paddle team and the successful candidate will be required to improve waterway access and delivering British Canoeing’s environmental awareness campaign. You will Lead on issues of environment and conservation; developing guidance, advice and content around sustainable canoeing behaviour.

The role will involve managing a team of ‘Waterway Volunteers’ providing guidance to ensure a consistent application of British Canoeing access and environment policy. This will include organising local access & environment forums to encourage and engage local paddlers and volunteers to raise concerns and address access issues and providing latest guidance and support on access and environmental issues to members, clubs and Centres and standing committees.

The ideal candidate will be passionate about protecting and enhancing the paddling environment. Will be able to liaise with key partners, volunteers, paddlers and government to champion the need for change and therefore we are looking for someone who is a confident communicator, who can negotiate with and influence a range of groups and partners.

Applicants for this post will require significant experience and Knowledge of the environment, and conservation; as well as the current situation with respect to access to and from the water.

Due to the nature of the work the role and to be successful in the role, the role holder must be willing and able to work the hours to get the job done. This will include evening and weekend meetings and travelling with overnight stays.
